Baccarat is a classic card game that has been a favourite among European aristocracy for centuries. Today it is one of the most widely played games in casinos around the world, and particularly beloved across Asia. At 22live, we offer the most thrilling version of this game — real-time gameplay with live dealers.
The beauty of Baccarat lies in its simplicity. Unlike other complex card games, you don't need to make a series of decisions. You simply place your bet on Player, Banker, or Tie — then the cards are dealt. Whoever's hand is closest to 9 wins. Thanks to these straightforward rules, new players can pick up the game in minutes and start enjoying it right away.
Baccarat originated in medieval Italy before gaining popularity in France. The name comes from the Italian word "baccara," meaning zero — referring to the value of tens and face cards. It was a favorite pastime among the French royal court. Baccarat was introduced in Havana, Cuba in the 1950s and later made its way into American casinos in Las Vegas. Today, it is the most widely played game in Macau's casinos, generating billions of dollars in annual revenue.
Baccarat rose to fame through the James Bond film franchise. In Ian Fleming's original novels and across various movies, Bond is seen playing Baccarat — most notably in "Casino Royale", where the game takes center stage. This cinematic exposure gave Baccarat an image of sophistication and thrill. When you play on 22live, you get to feel that same excitement for yourself.
Another major appeal of Baccarat is its high RTP (Return to Player). The Banker bet carries an RTP of 98.94%, which beats nearly every other casino game. This means that over the long run, you have a greater chance of recovering most of your wagers — which is exactly why serious players prefer Baccarat.

The objective in Baccarat is to predict whether the Player's or Banker's hand will be closer to 9. You don't play the cards yourself — you simply bet on who will win. The hand with a total value closest to 9 takes it.
Ace = 1 point | Cards 2–9 = face value | 10, Jack, Queen, King = 0 points. If the total exceeds 10, the tens digit is dropped. Example: 7 + 8 = 15, but the hand value is 5.
First, place your bet on Player, Banker, or Tie. The dealer then deals two cards each to the Player and Banker. A third card may be drawn according to set rules. The hand closest to 9 wins. If either hand scores a Natural (8 or 9 from the first two cards), no third card is drawn.
| Bet Type | Payout | House Edge | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 (5% commission) | 1.06% | 98.94% |
| Player | 1:1 | 1.24% | 98.76% |
| Tie | 8:1 or 9:1 | 14.36% | 85.64% |
| Player Pair | 11:1 | 10.36% | 89.64% |
| Banker Pair | 11:1 | 10.36% | 89.64% |
Please note: A 5% commission is deducted on winning Banker bets because the Banker has a slightly higher chance of winning. Even so, it remains the best bet due to its lowest house edge.
If either the Player or Banker scores 8 or 9 from their first two cards, it is a "Natural" and the game ends immediately. No third card is drawn.
The Tie bet pays more (8:1), but the house edge exceeds 14% — making it a poor wager. Experienced players steer clear of Tie bets.
Select tables on 22live offer No Commission Baccarat. No commission is charged on Banker wins, though special rules apply.
The rules for dealing a third card in Baccarat are predetermined. You don't need to make any decisions — the dealer follows the rules automatically.
This rule is straightforward and applies the same way in every game. The Player hand always receives cards first.
The Banker's third card rules are more complex and depend on the Player's third card:
Don't worry! No need to memorize these complex rules. On 22live, the dealer automatically follows all the rules. Just sit back, enjoy, and win!

While Baccarat is largely a game of chance, a few smart strategies can still improve your odds.
Statistically, Banker wins 50.68% of the time versus Player at 49.32%. This small edge makes a significant difference over the long run. Even after the 5% commission, the Banker bet remains the most profitable choice.
The Tie bet may look tempting with an 8:1 payout, but it only hits around 9.5% of the time. The house edge exceeds 14% — making it a costly choice. Experienced players never bet on Tie.
Set a budget for each session and stick to it. Never wager more than 5% of your total bankroll on a single hand. This will help you play longer and ride out any losing streaks.
Many players believe they can predict the next outcome by studying previous results. This is known as the "Gambler's Fallacy" and is mathematically incorrect. Every hand is independent. Even if Banker has won the last 10 hands, the probability of winning the next one remains exactly the same.
